Exceptional in BPS: Meet a BPS Team Member
Luis Arroyo
Elementary Science Specialist
Team: The Charles Taylor School
Career: 8 Years with BPS; 5 Years in Science
Position: Elementary Science Specialist
Spring Training
“Before becoming a teacher I worked as a social worker. This was not very rewarding for me. I used to deal with the most severe cases in the system. I started thinking about the children I was working with - this is when I decided that if I wanted to have a greater impact in their lives I needed to work with them before they entered the social service system. It was at this point that I decided to become a teacher, so that I could work with the children at an earlier age.”
Motivation:
“I chose Boston because I, too, am a product of the Boston Public Schools. I worked as a homeroom teacher for 8 years but my true passion has always been science. Four years ago I became a science specialist. Three years ago the science department gave me the opportunity to become one of their Teacher Leaders helping train other teachers throughout the district. This experience along with teaching in the classroom has been extremely rewarding for me.”
Commitment:
“I stay because I love working with the Science Department and I love working with my students.”
Interested in Applying to a Level 4 School?
Twelve Boston Public Schools are among the 35 schools statewide designated as "Level 4" by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. A Level 4 School has been significantly underperforming for several years, and the designation allows districts to utilize new tools granted in the landmark Massachusetts education reform law that was passed in January. These tools include the flexibility to change staffing and work conditions considerably.
